So, I'm reading Twilight simply because I have to know what all the unfortunate ruckus is about. I'm about halfway through and it isn't the horror I had been expecting...and then I came across this gem of a paragraph.
I tried to keep my eyes away from his perfection as much as possible, but I slipped often. Each time, his beauty pierced me through with sadness. (pg 257)
My friend Chris and I were talking the other night, and we were relating the Twilight craze to 'Left Behind'. Except, the Twilight series only has four books, unlike the LB series, which goes on endlessly. I am going to go out on a limb here though and say that I don't think even Stephenie Meyer can give LB a run for its money in the terrible writing category. Just my opinion.
Left Behind has a character named "Buck" and it is used seriously. Nothing gives Left Behind a run for its money.
Strangely, while I recognized the bad writing, I enjoyed the first experience of the Left Behind series. It wasn't until LaHaye / Jenkins were closing out the series (or so I thought at the time!) that it began to wear thin...and then Glorious Appearing happened...and then three prequels...and then one final epilogue of a novel...
And I freaking read them all and they just got worse and worse.
You read ALL of them?! Wow. I don't think I could get past five or six. I'm impressed with your stick-to-it-tivness (or however you write that word). haha!
No, but Twilight is a special case because I really wanted to finish the book so I could fully get the experience and know what I'm talking about. I have a couple of friends who read it.
So, I think I went into it with different goals / expectations than the average unknown novel.
Plus, despite that horrible, horrible quote, Twilight reads really quickly. The line pulled me out, but I was done quickly enough.
That paragraph is definitely something. I tend to avoid Young Adult Vampire/Romance Novels but I'll be interested to see what if any redeeming qualities this book has.
So Twilight really is as bad as people say...wonderful. Thanks for saving me the time it would take to read it one day.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't until that moment, and then it got worse all at once.
ReplyDeletehahaHA! You said fuck! I see it went well. :p

My full Twilight review goes up next week.

ReplyDeleteMy question is, was it enough to make you stop reading? I'd guess not, because your comment said you'd be posting a review next week?
ReplyDeleteI think the target audience is 16 year old girls.

ReplyDeleteHarrison: It depends if you're a 14 year old girl or not. :)
ReplyDeleteTwlight reads really quick and easy. I don't know if it will be a gateway novel that will lead kids to read more and more.
Bella is a very relateable character and there is a certain amount of wish-fulfillment that is involved in her character.
