I'm not a writer, but author Dan Simmons has an interesting series of articles on his website regarding the craft of writing. They are definitely worth reading.
I don't know, reading this short story has gotten me to start re-evaluating the man.
It's cheap fear-mongering of the Rush Limbaugh-kind.
I'm still hoping it's some kind of exercise in reproducing the deep-down buried fear of Islamic invasion - cultural, as well as physical - that western conservatives have been espousing (less loudly, and much more subtly) for the last decade.

That's an interesting story/essay. It's fairly heavy handed, but I still love Simmons novel length fiction, politics aside.
